Natalie Portman: Here For the Ages

An article about Natalie Portman.

Natalie Portman may have won her first Oscar this year for the controversial ballet film, "Black Swan" but she has been making waves in the entertainment world since she was 13 years old. She has been receiving critical nods from the industry since her compelling debut in the 1994 film, "The Professional." In 1999, just five years after her screen debut she won a Golden Globe for her starring role in the feature film, "Anywhere But Here." Rumors have swirled around that film because it initially featured a sex scene in which Portman turned down the role because of those demands, but the film's other lead, Susan Sarandon wanted Natalie Portman to play her daughter so badly that the scene was rewritten to meet Portman's needs.

Natalie Portman was cast in what is perhaps her most iconic role as a leading role in "The Star Wars" trilogy, and then she went on to play a unwed teenage mother in the comedy-drama, "Where The Heart Is." After this role, Natalie Portman decided to take a break from her first love of acting, and concentrate on her desire to get higher education. In 1999, she enrolled at Harvard University, where she received a Bachelor's degree in psychology. Due to her filming committments she already had before becoming a student, the talented actress did not finish her degree until 2003.

"Black Swan" has had major Hollywood buzz over the last year, due to Portman's amazing acting skills, and the style and story of the film. Recently, Natalie Portman's dancing ability has come under fire. Most dance inspired film feature dance doubles, and I have never heard the Oscar-winning claim that she was not doubled in any capacity, or form. The actress has been dancing since the age of four, and while I do not think she was ready for the grueling toe work the piece required I do think the accomplished actress could handle the dance close-ups with grace and ease. Either way, her performance was brilliant, and very deserving of her award.

Natalie Portman's body of work is extensive and thought provoking. She is still only 29 years old, and has a long career to look forward to. If she continues on this path, her roles in films will be continually celebrated and admired. She is an actress that has many emotional layers to her performances.

Wow, I couldn't place this actress until you mentioned the Star Wars. Oh That Natalie Portman. lol. Great review. I don't know anything about Black Swan, why was it so controversial?

I like her as Padme Amidala in "Star Wars Episode I" and as Evey in "V for Vendetta". Then of course there was that controversial film "Closer" with Julia Roberts and Jude Law.

I think there are many reasons---but the one I keep hearing is that it showcases the dark side of ballet for women. I think while ballet is very beautiful it is a very dark medium, and I liked the film as a psychology major too.

Oh thanks so much. I had no idea. I appreciate your quick response.

Excellent actress and by all accounts very intelligent, not to mention beautiful.

Great article, Portman really is an amazing talent, Can't believe she's only 29. Not seen Black Swan yet, it is amazing how much work she put in to that role.
