Joe DiMaggio is one of the best hitters in baseballs history. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe a match made in history.

Joe DiMaggio was born November 25, 1914 to an Italian immigrant family in Martinez, CA. He was the centerfield baseball player for the Major League team the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1951. He’s best know for his 56 game hitting streak from May 15 to July 16, 1941 and his marriage to Marilyn Monroe. He entered the baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 as a 3 time MVP 13 time All Star and as of 2011 had the 6th highest hitting percentage in history with a .579.

He made his debut with the Seals in 1932 and on November 21 signed to the Yankees. The first year he led the Yankees to 9 titles. In his career he stole home 5 times and was nicknamed in 1939 by announcer Arch McDonald the “Yankee Clipper” after the newly released Pan Am Airliner for the way he moved in the outfield with his speed and range. He joined the US Army on February 17, 1943 and worked as a physical instructor until his discharge for ulcers in September of 1945.

DiMaggio announced his retirement from the Yankees on December 19, 1951. “Jolten” Joe had a passion for the game that could not and still can’t be compared. His record still stands as a basis for every other player to base his skills upon. However; there was one other passion in his life, Marilyn Monroe. He obviously loved her with an endless love and one has to wonder how the two ever hooked up. Monroe didn’t initially want to meet DiMaggio because she thought he would be an atypical egotistical athlete. But they did.

On January 14, 1954 they eloped at San Francisco’s City Hall. Their relationship was turbulent and less than a year later they separated. In 1961 they reconciled and on August 1 Joe quit his job due to concerns he had about who Marilyn was keeping company with. She was found dead on August 5 and DiMaggio claimed her body and took care of her funeral arrangements. For 20 years he sent 3 dozen roses 3 times a week to her crypt.

He never spoke about their relationship and after fighting lung cancer he passed away at his home on March 8, 1999.He had never remarried and it was firmly believed that Marilyn was his one true love. He is thought of as one of the greatest baseball players in history but the mystique of his playing prowess as a baseball player is only compared to his mystique as the husband and lover of Marilyn Monroe.
